BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – A 30-year-old Grand Rapids man was taken into custody by Battle Creek police in the early morning hours of Friday, April 11, following a reckless driving spree that ended with the man’s minivan crashing through a home on Upton Avenue.

The incident began with a 911 call reporting a silver minivan driving erratically in Springfield. The caller observed the vehicle running stop signs and red lights near Lafayette Avenue and North 20th Street, before heading eastbound on Lafayette toward Battle Creek, then southbound on Kendall Street, continuing to run stop signs and red lights.

Shortly after police issued a be-on-the-lookout, Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch received multiple calls reporting that a van had crashed into a home on Upton Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers took the man into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and subsequently lodged in the Calhoun County Jail for Operating While Impaired. An uninjured dog was found in the vehicle and taken to a shelter. A 70-year-old woman, who was home at the time of the incident, was uninjured but trapped upstairs due to the vehicle resting in her living room. She was safely rescued through a window by Battle Creek firefighters from Station 4.

The Battle Creek Police and Fire Departments were assisted by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and LifeCare Ambulance in responding to this incident.

A silver minivan is partially embedded in front of a house on Upton Avenue on Friday, April 11.
