Dec. 9-15, 2024, is Michigan Water and Wastewater Professionals Week. Join us this week as we spotlight the essential water and wastewater professionals who provide water services to Battle Creek neighbors.

Meet Dexter Cheyne! After graduating from Athens High School, Dexter joined Team Battle Creek as a water distribution operator. He is responsible for maintaining the water distribution system and ensuring it remains safe for the public.

What’s the best part of your job?

I get to do something new almost every day, and I enjoy learning new things about the water system.

What’s a recent project that gave you a great sense of accomplishment? What made it special?

A recent project that gave me a great sense of accomplishment was the Elm Street project. We installed new valves and re-engineered the water main at the intersection to replace it with a smaller main. This upgrade allowed us to install a hydrant, significantly improving the water distribution system in that area.

What are some of the most significant improvements or changes you’ve seen in the water and wastewater systems in Battle Creek?

Our “Get the Lead Out!” Initiative is important to public health and safety. We’re proactively replacing lead service lines with copper and high-density polyethylene to protect our water supply now and for future generations.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

During my free time I like to hunt, fish, and be outdoors. I really enjoy that my job allows me to be outdoors.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be and why?

Weather control would help us get out work done so much faster!

Can you share a story where you saw firsthand the positive effects of your work on the community or the environment?

I enjoy seeing the relief and gratitude from neighbors after we remove and replace their lead service line. They're usually very happy with the improved water pressure and knowing they don't have to worry about lead service lines anymore.

What skills and qualities do you think are essential for someone in your position?

The ability to work collaboratively with others and build strong relationships, and the patience to endure challenging situations and identify solutions.

Is there anything people are routinely surprised to learn about your line of work?

My job can be challenging, but it’s also a lot of fun. I get paid to do something I enjoy, and it never gets old or boring.
