Dec. 9-15, 2024, is Michigan Water and Wastewater Professionals Week. Join us this week as we spotlight the essential water and wastewater professionals who provide water services to Battle Creek neighbors.

Meet Austin Payne! A former graduate of Bellevue High School, Austin is now a water distribution operator for the City of Battle Creek.

What are your primary duties?

Maintaining the water system, replacing water services, repairing hydrants, and working with the public.

What’s the best part of your job?

I never get stuck doing the same thing; there’s always something new to do and learn.

What notable improvements have you observed during your tenure with the city?

I’ve noticed the water quality improvements.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

I like to be productive, and I find myself working even in my free time.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be and why?

The ability to control the weather. I like water, but it’s no fun working in the rain.

Can you share an example of a time when your work had a positive impact on the community?

When there's a water main break or an urgent repair, we work outside, sometimes through the night, until the water is restored. Neighbors see us working in all kinds of weather and often express their gratitude.

What skills and qualities do you think are essential for someone in your position?

It’s as simple as knowing your left from your right and having a bit of common sense and the ability to communicate and connect with neighbors when problems arise.
