[ARCHIVED] Neighbors invited to conversations about fire station proposal

Collage of the six Battle Creek fire stations.

Neighbors are invited to a series of six community conversations – one at each of our six fire stations – to learn and ask questions about a proposal to upgrade and reimagine our fire station buildings.

The most significant changes surround our most historic, 100-plus-year-old Station 2 on Washington Avenue and Station 3 on Cliff Street, which are no longer suitable as modern fire station buildings. We propose building a new Station 2 near the current location, and closing Station 3, moving that crew to join the crew at Station 1 on East Michigan Avenue.

We will share new images and cost estimates for each fire station at each of the meetings. We will ask for neighbors’ opinions and feedback about these plans to improve the way our stations operate.

Presenting information and answering neighbor questions will be City Manager Rebecca Fleury, Fire Chief Bill Beaty, and Architect Cody Newman of Driven Design Studio, which is working with the city on this proposed series of projects.

The city has researched, assessed, and studied the fire stations over the years, with the help of a variety of consultants. We have discussed this information with our Battle Creek Fire Department team, and feel we have the best proposal for the city.

Please join us to learn more and participate in this community feedback opportunity. The presentations will be similar at each station, so neighbors do not have to attend more than one. Conversations are set as follows:

  • Wednesday, April 17, 1:30-3:30 p.m. – (seeking American Sign Language interpretation)
    Station 1, 195 E. Michigan Ave.
AccessVision will record this conversation for later online and cable broadcast.

  • Saturday, April 27, 9-11 a.m.
    Station 2, 145 N. Washington Ave.

  • Wednesday, May 1, 9-11 a.m. – (seeking Spanish interpretation)
    Station 3, 222 Cliff St.

  • Monday, May 6, 6-8 p.m. – (seeking Spanish and Burmese interpretation)
    Station 4, 8 S. 20th St.

  • Saturday, June 1, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
    Station 5, 1170 W. Michigan Ave.

  • Monday, June 3, 6-8 p.m.
Station 6, 2401 Capital Ave. SW

We will have more information available on the website soon; look for fire station information in the City Spotlights at battlecreekmi.gov. Contact us with questions at 269-966-3519 (Fire Department) and PublicInput@battlecreekmi.gov.
