Battle Creek Police Department patch

A man is in jail today, with charges pending against a woman, related to a morning breaking and entering incident.

At about 7:30 a.m. police officers were sent to a breaking and entering in progress at The Tobacco Shoppe, 116 E. Columbia Ave. A witness said they saw a person trying to force entry into the store through a window, and then saw the person exit the building a short time later, carrying a large garbage bag and leaving westbound on foot.

Officers set up a perimeter in the area, and Sgt. Stuart Bell saw a man matching the suspect’s description riding a bike through the Family Fare parking lot on Columbia. Police detained the suspect and, after viewing The Tobacco Shoppe’s security footage, determine it was the person who had broken in.

Police identified a second suspect, a woman, and located her a short time later. She had items stolen from the store. Police also found additional stolen items hidden in the area.

The man admitted to being responsible for numerous other breaking and entering incidents at other businesses in Battle Creek, Emmett Township, and elsewhere in Calhoun County.

The man is in Calhoun County Jail on charges of breaking and entering. Police are seeking charges against the woman, and she is not in jail at this time.
