BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — The City of Battle Creek's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Department is currently underway with their city streetlight inventory project.
This project, conducted annually, helps to document the operational status of streetlights throughout the city. The work includes identifying lights that are on or off during the evening, as well as noting any other issues.
The city streetlight inventory project is generally carried out in three phases:
- Phase 1 — One or two teams of city GIS staff systematically drive through the entire city, collecting data using GIS tools.
- Phase 2 — Upon completion, a report is generated and submitted to the city manager.
- Phase 3 — The city manager then shares the findings with Consumers Energy to address and resolve any reported streetlight issues.
Because the project focuses on verifying whether streetlights are functioning properly at night, all fieldwork must be performed during evening hours. Neighbors might notice a city vehicle driving slowly through neighborhoods late at night conducting this important work.
City GIS staff estimate that the city streetlight inventory project will be completed by the end of November.
As a general reminder, neighbors can report issues with city streetlights in their neighborhood throughout the year by reporting them to Consumers Energy via their Streetlight Outages Map.
