BATTLE CREEK, Mich. —The reopening of Watkins Road is now expected to take approximately three more weeks, as crews complete the final steps of the city’s infrastructure improvement project. Originally scheduled to finish by mid-August, the timeline has shifted due to heavy rainfall and persistently wet conditions around Minges Brook, which have slowed progress.
Despite the delay, the project continues to move forward, with final paving tentatively scheduled for late August.
After delays caused by challenging soil conditions earlier this week, the directional drilling company successfully completed the final water main bore on Aug. 14. The contractor is now connecting the water main to the bore, which will complete that portion of the work.
Remaining work includes:
- Raising manholes to final grade in preparation for paving
- Placing the second and final layer of asphalt
- Pouring driveway approaches after paving
- Final paving (tentatively scheduled for late August)
The Watkins Road project began March 31 with the goal of improving safety, water flow, and long-term infrastructure. The work includes replacing aging culverts, upgrading utilities, and restoring the natural flow of Minges Brook. Once complete, the improvements will enhance environmental resilience and roadway reliability for years to come.
We appreciate the community’s continued patience—especially residents of Watkins Road and nearby streets affected by the detour—as we complete this important work.
We’ll continue to share updates as we near reopening.
