BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4, the Battle Creek Fire Department responded to a structure fire at an abandoned commercial building located at 68 Upton Ave. Car 3 arrived on scene within three minutes and encountered heavy smoke conditions throughout the structure.

Crews from Rescue 2 and Truck 1 forced entry into the building, conducted a search for victims, and advanced a hose line just inside the front entryway to extinguish the bulk of the fire. Engine 3 and Engine 4 assisted with establishing a water supply and ventilation, while Engine 5 provided support functions. LifeCare Ambulance was on standby at the scene to support firefighter safety.

The building has been vacant and condemned for several years and has experienced past fires. Due to its condition, crews exercised caution during the response to ensure firefighter safety. No injuries were reported during the fire response.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire marshal.
