[ARCHIVED] Voice your vision: participate in the Kalamazoo River survey

River Revitalization Survey

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Kalamazoo River in Downtown Battle Creek is poised for a transformative change. Approximately 60 years ago, a flood reduction project led to the channelization of the river with concrete banks designed to swiftly move water away from the downtown area. However, these concrete structures are now aging, unattractive, detrimental to the river's ecology, and they rely on outdated flood management techniques.

To reimagine the river, the City of Battle Creek is developing a river corridor concept that will replace the concrete banks with native plants. This approach aims to effectively manage stormwater and flood flows while enhancing the natural and aquatic health of the Kalamazoo River. The project includes long-term visioning to revitalize the river corridor, support additional recreational opportunities, and improve connectivity to Downtown Battle Creek.

Over the next 18 months, a conceptual plan for the future of the Kalamazoo River corridor will be developed. A team of experts will study the removal of the existing Monroe Street dam, the replacement of the concrete channel with flood-tolerant plants, and the establishment of the river corridor as a valuable amenity for Battle Creek residents. They will also identify the necessary steps to turn this vision into reality.

To kick off this process, we want to hear from you! Your ideas will help shape the future vision of the Kalamazoo River. Please take a moment to complete this survey and share your thoughts.
