Feb. 16-22, 2025, is Engineers Week. Join us as we spotlight some of the people behind the design, construction, and record-keeping of our city's streets, bridges, and water and sewer systems.

Meet Tad McCrumbTad currently serves as a civil engineer for the City of Battle Creek, where he is responsible for infrastructure design, including water, sanitary, storm, and surface treatments. He also manages public utility projects utilizing private contractors.

Tad holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Ferris State University and is a licensed Professional Engineer. Additionally, he possesses an S-4 water distribution license from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

What’s the best part of your job?

Being involved with all aspects of the project, from start to finish.

What emerging technologies are you most excited about, and how do you see them impacting your work?

Global Positioning System (GPS).

What role do you think engineers will play in addressing future challenges in Battle Creek?

As the infrastructure continues to age, we will need to watch new and evolving methods for construction and rehabilitation to ensure our city gets the most value for its money spent.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working?

My family and I enjoy camping and participating in traditional archery shoots through the course of the summer, along with running events. I spend a fair amount of time working around our house and repairing various projects.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be and why?

Like most things, a large part of this job comes down to effective communication. As engineers for the city, we must communicate with the neighbors of our city, state governing agencies, contractors, and other city departments. So, I would say effectivecleacommunication.

What skills and qualities do you think are essential for someone in your position?

A good understanding of how engineering principles and construction practices intersect, so that projects not only function well but are also able to be constructed efficiently.
