[ARCHIVED] Public hearing 1/16 will take comments on continuing Transit service reductions

Battle Creek Transit bus stopped at a shelter at the downtown transfer center

Transit public hearing notice

Audiencia pública - 16 de enero de 2024

--

Battle Creek Transit services will stay the same as they are now, but federal law requires the city to hold a public hearing about Transit service changes we made a year ago due to staff shortages.

The public hearing will be at the regular City Commission meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 16, starting at 7 p.m. in the third-floor chambers at City Hall, 10 N. Division St.

In December 2022 Transit reduced service due to staff shortages and, unfortunately, those reductions continue today. Those reductions were to eliminate Saturday service, eliminate late-night service, and reduce frequency across some of the bus fixed routes.

While we intended these reductions to be temporary, the staffing shortages have extended beyond 12 months. Federal Transit Administration regulations require us to hold a public hearing at that time threshold. Riders, neighbors, and anyone else may give public comments about the service changes, as the City Commission will consider action that could affirm the current levels of service.

Battle Creek Transit can still restore service to previous levels when and if staffing allows it, even if the commission votes to affirm the current service levels. We hope that will happen as we work hard to meet the community’s transportation needs.

If you cannot attend the City Commission meeting and the public hearing, you can submit written comments to: Mallory Avis, BCT Director, 339 W. Michigan Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49037. You can also email mravis@battlecreekmi.gov. We must receive written comments by this Friday, Jan. 12.

Free transportation to the meeting and public hearing is available! Please call Transit by 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15 at 269-966-3474.

Battle Creek Transit will provide necessary, reasonable auxiliary aids and services, such as sign language interpreters for the hearing impaired, large print, braille, or audio tapes of printed materials being considered during the meeting with seven days of notice to BCT. Individuals requiring auxiliary aids or other services should contact BCT at least seven days before the Jan. 16 meeting; contact BCT Mobility Manager Kristy Grestini at 269-966-3489 or klgrestini@battlecreekmi.gov.

Current Transit service looks like this:

  • Fixed-route buses operate 5:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m. with no service during the lunch hour of 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
  • Tele-Transit, our scheduled door-to-door service, provides service from 5 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • BCGo, our countywide scheduled/on-demand service, provides service from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

As always, please call Transit staff for help planning your trip at 269-966-3474.
