[ARCHIVED] Committee seeks public comment on city charter issues

Blue Ribbon Committee 2018

The 18-person committee tasked with considering potential changes to the city charter wants to hear from the community.

The committee, established and appointed by the City Commission, will consider potential changes to the selection of mayor and vice mayor; the size of the commission; staggering of commissioner terms; length of commissioner terms; gendered charter language; and any other relevant issues.

Questions related to those issues now are available in a survey, live online directly at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PHDXD5K. The link also is available on the city’s home page, battlecreekmi.gov. Scroll down to the City Spotlight section.

The city will include a printed version of the survey in the May water bills. City neighbors can complete those, and send them back with their bills. The online survey still will be available during this time.

The committee will meet next at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, after spring break. Meetings are held at the city’s Department of Public Works, 150 S. Kendall St., and are open to the public.

A city or municipal charter provides the basis for most municipal regulatory functions, and for the delivery of municipal services. The charter for the City of Battle Creek is available through our website, battlecreekmi.gov. Navigate to the I Want To… tab, then Find a City Ordinance. The charter link is near the top in the list of contents.

AccessVision will record and air all upcoming meetings. Meetings are available on demand at the AccessVision website, accessvision.tv/videos.

To offer additional comments, questions, and feedback on these and related issues, contact the committee at PublicInput@battlecreekmi.gov.
