Mattress bags again available; automated recycling truck in the city

Mattress and truck news

In solid waste news, the city again has plastic bags available for wrapping mattresses, and Waste Management now has an automated truck picking up recycling in the city.

Mattress bags

Waste Management has supplied the city with large plastic bags, so that those within the city limits can wrap mattresses and box springs for curbside disposal.

The bags, offered at no charge, are large enough to hold a 12-inch-thick mattress or box spring.

Neighbors can stop in Room 117 at City Hall, 10 N. Division, during regular business hours, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday; or the Department of Public Works, 150 S. Kendall, from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The only requirements are to supply your name and address for record-keeping purposes.

Code officers also have distributed bags and an information card when they see a need during their typical work around the city.

Staff appreciate everyone’s help to wrap these items; the practice addresses general sanitation and bed bug concerns.

New truck for recycling pickup

On Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, city customers will see a new Waste Management truck picking up the recycling.

The automated side-load truck – ASL – has automated arms on the side that lift and dump the recycling container, eliminating the need for the driver to lift and move the containers.

Staff requests that these neighbors in particular please note the importance of cart placement at the curb. Please be sure it is several feet from your trash containers, with no other obstructions, so the truck arms can grip it. Please also face the cart handles toward your home, so that the cart opens toward the street, and recyclables will drop into the truck.

While the ASL truck drivers make every effort to place the containers back onto the curb, sometimes conditions may require placement on the street, and up against the curb.

Staff appreciate everyone’s attention and understanding.
