Fire Chief Schmaltz taking leave of absence

Fire Department patch

The city’s fire chief, Dave Schmaltz, has taken a leave of absence, effective today.

Schmaltz, who has served as the city’s fire chief since February of 2014, requested the time to focus on his personal well-being, and consider his future options.

In the interim, Police Chief Jim Blocker will serve as the director of fire and police services for the city.

“We are blessed as a community to be surrounded by seasoned firefighters – consummate professionals who understand their role, and its importance,” Blocker said. “As first responders, we understand that fire and police services are a team sport – each with a unique role.

“During this transition, I anticipate no impact to our emergency response, or operations. We will continue the good work begun under Chief Schmaltz’s leadership.”

City administrators expect the interim to last up to six months.

Schmaltz has been checking in with city administrators on a regular basis.

Out of respect for Schmaltz’s privacy, city administrators will not discuss his leave. They will release more information as it is appropriate.

“Our city has an incredible team of capable firefighters, and I anticipate a seamless transition in this interim period,” said City Manager Rebecca Fleury. “Our employees are a top priority, and we want to do everything possible to help them find success in both their personal and professional lives.”
