The 18-person committee tasked with considering potential changes to the city charter will meet for the first time on Feb. 7.

The Blue Ribbon Advisory Committee was established Jan. 2 by the City Commission, with members appointed Jan. 16. Each commissioner submitted two members for appointment.

The committee will consider potential changes to the selection of mayor and vice mayor; the size of the commission; staggering of commissioner terms; length of commissioner terms; gendered charter language; and any other relevant issues.

The committee’s first meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at the city’s Department of Public Works, 150 S. Kendall St. This meeting is open to the public.

The appointed members of the committee are:

Jeremy Andrews
Kathy Antaya
Terry Burleson
William Burton
Randall Champlin
Gerardyne Drozdowski
Mary Forney
John Godfrey
Bill Hanner
Andy Helmboldt
Walt McIlroy
James Moreno
John J.H. Schwarz
Shanay Settles
Becky Squires
Tracie Tomak
David Weaver
Robert Whitfield

While the resolution to appoint committee members originally designated Schwarz as the chairperson, the commission voted during its Jan. 16 meeting to remove that provision. The committee members now will select a chairperson by majority vote at their first meeting.

Future meetings will be scheduled at a later date.

A city or municipal charter provides the basis for most municipal regulatory functions, and for the delivery of municipal services.
