Neighbors asked for input on potential medical marihuana regulations

The City Commission wants to hear public input about whether the City of Battle Creek should allow medical marihuana business permits.

The State of Michigan will begin allowing five different medical marihuana licenses starting on Dec. 15 – growing, processing, safety compliance facility (testing), transporting, and provisioning center (selling). At that time, the state will allow local governments to permit any – or none – of these license categories within their jurisdictions.

Before taking action to allow, or not allow, any of these types of medical marihuana licenses, the City Commission is taking public comments about this new industry in Michigan.

City staff have created a Frequently Asked Questions section, related to the industry; a series of maps showing potential locations for these businesses in the city; and an online survey to take public input and comments.

A paper version of the survey also appears this month in the city’s BC City Connection newsletter that is distributed to neighbors. It can be returned in the same envelope when customers pay their water bills.

To access these items, visit the city’s website at battlecreekmi.gov/planning. Scroll down to the medical marihuana section.

Staff will collect input throughout the month of October. Neighbors also can email comments to PublicInput@battlecreekmi.gov or call the Planning Division at 269-966-3320.
