The community is invited to attend Saturday’s Welcoming Week soccer tournament, featuring four teams.

Games will begin at 9 a.m. and will be 60 minutes each. There will be two first-round games, followed by a championship game. A trophy ceremony will follow the championship.

First-round matchups are FC Lumbang versus BC City, and FC Young Bloods versus BC Falam.

The tournament, with support from the city, other local organizations and individuals in the soccer community, will take place at the Riverside Park west fields, 650 Riverside Drive. Parking is at the school and the playground is open for families.

Stop by the grill tent on the way in for a free ticket for a hot dog, chips, and a drink. The grill opens at 10 a.m.

Attendees should bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy the game. With the forecast showing a high temperature Saturday in the 90s, please be mindful of the heat and bring plenty of water. There is no alcohol allowed on school property.

Welcoming Week, Sept. 15-24, is an annual series of events across the country to celebrate inclusive communities. This is a movement of Welcoming America, a network of communities that are committed to making everyone feel like they belong, believing that all people, including immigrants, are valued contributors to and vital to the success of their communities.

The City Commission in April 2016 approved a resolution to affirm Battle Creek as a Welcoming City, recognizing that inclusion of all members of the community is essential to meeting the city’s mission of ensuring a safe, prosperous, and culturally enriched community.
