[ARCHIVED] City Commission petition packets available on June 5

Those interested in running for a position on the City Commission in this year’s Nov. 7 election may begin collecting petition signatures on Monday, June 5.

All nine seats on the commission are available this year.

Potential candidates should note that, because the current City Commission approved moving city elections from odd to even years going forward, those elected this fall will serve three-year terms. Starting in 2020, terms will return to two years.

At-large commission candidates (four seats) must be registered voters in the city and collect at least 100, but not more than 150, valid signatures of registered Battle Creek voters.

Ward candidates (five seats) must be registered voters and residents in the wards for which they are running, and collect at least 50, but not more than 75, valid signatures of Battle Creek voters within their wards.

Petitions and an Affidavit of Identity are due to the City Clerk’s Office, Room 111 at City Hall, 10 N. Division St., by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25.

This and other important information, as well as links to other documents candidates must complete, are now available on the city’s website, battlecreekmi.gov/elections. Click the Candidate Filing Information tab.

All documents – with the exception of the petitions and Affidavit of Identity, which are available at the clerk’s office – are available electronically. Anyone wanting hard copies of the other documents may request them from the clerk’s office, 269-966-3348.
