[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Capital SW closure extended, Transit detours continue during sewer lining

City street map with teal line over Capital SW in Old Lakeview, and dashed line for detour.

Drivers on Capital Avenue SW in the Old Lakeview area will see additional closures due to a continued project equipment delay.

The road closures are part of a project to add a lining to a large sanitary sewer pipe in the east-central part of the city.

The work will affect Capital Avenue SW between Territorial Road and Columbia Avenue as follows:

  • Today through Friday, Oct. 7 – Local traffic only. Through traffic should follow the detour on Columbia Avenue, Riverside Drive, and East Territorial Road.
  • Today through Friday, Oct. 7 – Highland Avenue is closed from Fairfield Avenue to Wentworth Avenue.

Two Battle Creek Transit bus route detours will continue through Oct. 7 while this work project continues:

4S – SW Capital – please note this detour has changed

  • The 4S bus will travel down Capital turning left on Territorial Road, right on Riverside Drive, right on Columbia Avenue, and left on Capital to resume the regular route.
  • During the detour, the bus will NOT service stops on Capital SW between Territorial and Columbia. Riders in this area should plan to use the bus stop by Dollar General (before Territorial Road) or by Weeks Avenue.
  • The 4S bus will NOT travel on Grand Boulevard for the rest of the detour. We removed the temporary stops.

2W – Columbia-Territorial

  • The bus will travel down Territorial, turning right on Bechman Avenue, left on Surby Avenue, right on Highland Avenue, and right on Columbia Avenue to resume the regular route.
  • The bus will NOT service stops on Territorial at Pioneer, Territorial at Highland Avenue, and Highland Avenue at Wentworth Avenue. We encourage riders to use the stops on Territorial before Bechman, or Highland near Planet Fitness.

As always, call the Transit team with questions or help planning a trip at 269-966-3474, and sign up for Transit alert notifications at battlecreekmi.gov/notifyme.

As the sewer lining project moves, neighbors will receive door hangers 24 hours ahead of work on their streets. While non-excessive toilet use will be OK, we will ask neighbors to delay washing clothes and dishes, and any other heavy water uses, for about 24 hours after the work moves through, so the lining adhesive can set.

The project started Sept. 6 at Wentworth Avenue/Foster Avenue. It is moving to Foster/Orleans Avenue, Orleans/Capital Avenue SW, Capital SW/Grandview Court, and will finish at Grandview/Grand Boulevard. Work is moving from one manhole to the next along the route.

This project will add a lining to a 24-inch to 30-inch sanitary sewer main that has been deteriorating inside due to naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide gas. The lining will protect the concrete pipe and restore the main to its original thickness. It will also add at least 70 years to the design life of the sewer main. The lining is a felt material that will stick to the pipe with a wet resin.

Neighbors might notice some odor from the resin – a glue-like smell. Please contact our Department of Public Works with any questions at 269-966-3343.
