UPDATE -- Unfortunately, we have canceled the open house, due to rain. We DO plan to reschedule for a later date, so please stay tuned!

The city’s Department of Public Works provides services to neighbors that affect their daily lives. Flush a toilet? Drive on a road? Thank a Public Works professional!
To help celebrate National Public Works Week next week, the city will hold an open house in the department’s front parking lot, at 150 S. Kendall St.
We invite neighbors to join us from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18. Because the event will be outdoors, it will be weather dependent.
Public Works includes providing drinking water, treating wastewater, streets, engineering, keeping infrastructure records, and fleet services on everything from chainsaws to fire trucks. This year’s Ready and Resilient theme for the week explains the way a Department of Public Works is always ready to serve its community, and is resilient in that service through any challenges.
Our Public Works team will welcome neighbors with:
- Many of the big city vehicles that help us serve, including a plow truck, Republic Services waste truck, street sweeper, and backhoe.
Learn about what these vehicles do, and climb inside for a new perspective! - Demonstrations, including our Water team racing the clock to build a fire hydrant, and what it looks like in a sewer pipe.
- Fun giveaways! Pick up a bucket of city-made compost! Spin the trivia wheel and earn prizes like reusable grocery bags, notebooks, and dog poo bag dispensers! Grab a traffic cone squishy while supplies last!
We hope to see neighbors of all ages join our team for the Public Works experience! We will provide snacks, and will have restrooms available.
