[ARCHIVED] Police investigate assault on mail carrier

Battle Creek Police Department patch

Battle Creek Police are investigating the assault of a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in the Post Addition on Thursday afternoon.

Police responded at 2:20 p.m. to Illinois Street, where the mail carrier was delivering mail.

An unknown young man, believed to be in his mid- to late-teens, approached the mail carrier from behind and punched him in the head, then continued to throw punches. The mail carrier tried to defend himself, and the two struggled.

During the time of the struggle, two more teenage young men joined the incident and began assaulting the mail carrier. All of the suspects left the area before police arrived.

The mail carrier suffered minor injuries, and continued on his delivery route after speaking to police. It appears that this incident was random and unprovoked.

Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information on this incident – including identity of the teenage suspects – should contact police at 269-781-0911 or call Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.
