Owners of rental housing are invited to attend a dinner and discussion session on Tuesday, April 19 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at The Salvation Army, 400 Capital Avenue NE.
Kris Miller, lawyer and Director of Enforcement for the Fair Housing Center of Southwest Michigan, will present information on fair housing, as well as answer questions. April is Fair Housing Month and this interactive presentation is part of activities to recognize the importance of fair housing.

Fair housing is the right to choose housing free from unlawful discrimination. Federal, state and local fair housing laws protect people from discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, disability, marital status and age. Discrimination is illegal in housing transactions such as rentals, sales, lending and insurance.

The goal of this outreach effort to area landlords is for nonprofit service providers to develop better relationships with rental property owners and to expand opportunities for homeless families and individuals to find and remain successfully housed in safe, affordable housing. This is the fourth landlord outreach event organized by the Rental Housing Roundtable, part of the Greater Battle Creek Homeless Coalition

Landlords are invited to attend and RSVP to 269-966-3364 or email rentalroundtablebc@gmail.com. Landlords can also register at http://goo.gl/forms/Ztjo8SvOn3

Participating organizations include Community Action, Legal Services of South Central Michigan, The Haven, Summit Pointe Housing, The Salvation Army, Southwest Michigan Community Development Corporation (formerly Neighborhoods, Inc. of Battle Creek), the Fair Housing Center of Southwest Michigan, the SHARE Center, S.A.F.E. Place, and the City of Battle Creek Community Development Division. The event is sponsored by participating organizations with funding from the Battle Creek Community Foundation and the Battle Creek Housing Commission.

Rental property owners who attend will be entered into a drawing to win two $25 Lowe’s gift certificates.
