Other information: The Battle Creek Fire Department was still on the scene of the earlier, Merritt Street structure fire, when dispatched to another residential structure fire at 132 Lafayette Street. Squad 4 arrived to find fire on the first floor of a single family residential structure. The exterior of the house and car parked outside received significant fire damage. Rescue 4 stretched an attack line to extinguish the exterior fire and then proceeded interior to extinguish the first-floor fire. Truck 6 assisted to extinguish the interior fire and check for any occupants. All occupants had safely exited prior to arrival. Rescue 3, Engine 5, Squad 6, and the Bedford Township Fire Department assisted with fire attack operations. No injuries were reported and the fire was believed to have started from discarded fireworks in an exterior garbage can next to the home. Hard work by firefighters on this back-to-back fire with high temperature conditions saved the house from more significant damage.
