The Utilities Director reports to the Assistant City Manager and is responsible for overseeing the production and treatment of the community's drinking water and the collection and treatment of the community's wastewater. This office is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City’s water, sanitary sewer and storm sewer systems, for long-range planning for the City's water and sanitary sewer systems and overseeing environmental investigation and remediation activities on municipally-owned property.

The Environmental Programs Coordinator oversees several important environmental issues within the Battle Creek area, such as storm water permit compliance, wellhead/drinking water protection, plan implementation, and projects related to water, sewer, and solid waste. Raising the awareness of citizens on important environmental issues is another responsibility of the Environmental Programs Coordinator. This is done through events such as the Water Festival, Green Drinks, and the River Cleanup.
