Officer Gregory Gammons
Length of service: Five years with Battle Creek; 20 in law enforcement.
Duties: Dayshift patrol officer in the Verona area, and a training officer
What people should know about policing: The real world is nothing like it is on TV and in the movies.
Favorite thing about Battle Creek: The folks who live here! I've met countless wonderful folks who call this place home.
Fun fact: Originally went to college to be a high school biology teacher. Took a wrong turn one day on the way to class, and ended up driving a patrol car for a living!
Deputy Chief Troy Gilleylen
Length of service: 24 years with Battle Creek this August
Duties: Patrol deputy chief, overseeing the BCPD's Patrol Division
What people should know about policing: This is a career where no day is the same. It can be tough at times, but I don't think there are too many professions as rewarding. You really must take it day by day and do your best. You must provide people with resources and point them in the right direction to help solve their problems. But it is equally important that police officers take time for themselves. After almost 24 years, I look back, and I don't think that I could have done any other career.
Favorite thing about Battle Creek: Growing up, cereal was big in my family. Cereal was a morning tradition. When I moved here, being able to smell the cereal being made, and taking part in events with Kellogg's and Post, was huge to me.
Fun fact: Avid fisherman; love being on the water. It relaxes me and provides the time out that I need. There is nothing like going out in the early morning to witness the sunrise and feel the glow on your face.
Officer Stephen Herbstreith
Length of service: 5.5 years with Battle Creek
Duties: Lakeview School District school resource officer
What people should know about policing: I think something about policing that people need to know is the importance of building relationships within the community.
Favorite thing about Battle Creek: I love that Battle Creek is known for sports, and the sporting events that are held every year.
Fun fact: I am an avid bowler, and enjoy league and tournament bowling in my spare time.
Officer Shamiyha Hickman
Length of service: Four years with Battle Creek
Duties: Patrol officer
What people should know about policing: Actual police work is nothing like you see on TV. There's a lot more paperwork and a lot fewer chases.
Favorite thing about Battle Creek: The diversity within the community. There are a lot of different ethnicities, and people from all walks of life in our city.
Officer Deaudre Perry
Length of service: 4.5 years with Battle Creek
Duties: Battle Creek Central High School officer liaison - I work with the staff and students to build positive relationships.
What people should know about policing: People should know that policing is an act of service, not just a job.
Favorite thing about Battle Creek: My favorite thing about BC is the small-town feel. Everyone knows everyone else.
Fun fact: I am an ordained reverend and I serve at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Washington Heights.
