Gang Suppression Unit

About the Unit
The Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) was formed in 2007 to be a street crimes enforcement unit. At that time, Battle Creek was experience a spike in gang related shootings. GSU began combating violent crimes specific to gang violence.

Over the past number of years, GSU has been able to assist the department and the community in controlling gang violence and has not expanded its focus to include violent crimes, drug crimes, prostitution or any other high profile issues. GSU also has taken a role in helping to train new hires about officer safety concerns and problem based policing.

Currently, GSU spends a majority of its time working in conjunction with the Special Investigation Unit and the Detective Bureau. GSU intends to continue being effective by utilizing aggressive enforcement which they believe has helped to bridge an understanding between the police department and the community.
